Wallis Simpson: The Fashion & Style Icon In Pictures

duchess of windsor wedding dress

At the start of WWII, King George VI named his brother Governor of the Bahamas. Here, they are photographed in Bermuda on their way to the islands. Simpson wears her famous Cartier flamingo pin and a tailored blazer piped in black. The wedding took place six months after the Duke of Windsor abdicated his responsibilities as a monarch and after Simpson had sued for divorce from her second husband, the British-American businessman Ernest Simpson. Born Bessie Wallis Warfield in 1896 in Pennsylvania, Wallis Simpson's own parents had a marriage that was disapproved of by their families. She, after her father passed, lived with her mother in Baltimore in somewhat dire conditions before going to the most prestigious girls' finishing school in Maryland, paid for by her uncle.

Lady Elizabeth wore an antique ivory veil made of Flanders lace veil and secured in place on her head with a simple wreath of myrtle leaves with a cluster of white York roses and white heather positioned on either side of her head. The veil was presented to the bride from her future mother-in-law, Queen Mary, to wear on the wedding day. For the bride’s “something old”, a piece of Brussels lace said to be a Strathmore family heirloom, was added to the wedding dress. To complete the bridal ensemble, Elizabeth’s shoes were made from ivory silk moiré and embroidered with silver roses.

Celebration – British Royal Wedding Dresses (Part Two)

Viewed from behind a glass box in the castle’s Grand Reception Room (where the Queen hosted the couple’s wedding reception!), Meghan talks visitors through exactly why she chose the French fashion house Givenchy. The couple, after marrying, lived in Europe for the rest of their lives. Simpson, always known for her singular sense of style, wears a jacket decorated with rosettes and a cheeky matching hat.

Promotion of the blog on other social media platforms targeted three million followers on Instagram, 800,000 on Facebook, and 350,000 on Twitter. In January 2018, she took all articles offline and deleted her social media accounts. It is estimated that Markle's social media activities annually earned her about $80,000 from endorsements and sponsorships. In January 2022 and following criticism aimed at Spotify for their handling of COVID-19 misinformation, Meghan and Harry made an announcement stating that since April 2021 they had begun "expressing concerns" about the issue on the platform.

For the civil ceremony, Chevallier wore a silkjumpsuit—a royal wedding first—and later changed into ashort lace dress with an overskirt for the reception. Designed byAtelier Boisangerand the groom's sister, Pauline Ducruet, the white gown featured Zagar and chantilly lace and was paired with a dramatic veil. It's one of the most famous blue wedding dresses in the world even it's usually seen in black and white. It's about as well known as a royal wedding gown gets even though it was worn to a ceremony that took place behind closed doors and which was recorded for posterity in a brief photo session in the hot French sun later on.

Yet the dress worn by Wallis Warfield Simpson at her wedding to Edward, Duke of Windsor has a place in royal history all of its own. This is the gown worn to the wedding that changed the House of Windsor, and royalty, forever. Lady Elizabeth Bowes-Lyon married Prince Albert on April 26, 1923 in Westminster Abbey located in London. Elizabeth’s wedding dress was designed by Madame Handley Seymour, the former London court dressmaker to Queen Mary. The front of the skirt was gently gathered at the waist and had a vertical silver lame panel that was also decorated with more gold embroidery edged with pearl and paste beads.

The commission later concluded that the foundation did not act unlawfully, but criticized the board of directors for expending a "substantial proportion of funds" to setting up and closing the charity. In March 2020, it was announced that Meghan's first post-royal project would be the narration of Disneynature's documentary Elephant, which was released on April 3. In support of elephants, Disneynature and the Disney Conservation Fund would donate to Elephant Without Borders for species conservation in Botswana. In April 2020, Meghan and her husband, in a private capacity, volunteered to personally deliver foods prepared by the Project Angel Food to Los Angeles residents amidst the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States. In June 2020, the couple backed the Stop Hate for Profit campaign and encouraged CEOs of different companies to join the movement. In July 2020, she spoke in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

Of course, we use the words "seems to be" here knowing full well that this is Scandal and, therefore, there is a reasonably good chance that nothing goes according to plan and everything falls. Though Harry and Meghan still technically retain their HRH styles, they have agreed they will not use them. They have not been stripped of them, unlike Harry's mother Diana, Princess of Wales following her divorce. In 2018, Time magazine selected Meghan as one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World and placed her on its shortlist for Person of the Year. Her name appeared again on the listicle in 2021 and she and her husband were featured on one of the magazine's seven worldwide covers.

In this post, the first of the two part series on Royal Wedding Dresses, I will start with Queen Victoria who married Prince Albert in 1840 through to the Duchess of Windsor who married the Duke of Windsor in 1937. The Duke, the former King Edward VIII, had abdicated in 1936 amid scandal and disastrous worldwide publicity. I know normally Wallis Simpson is not included when discussing the British Royal family but she was known for her great fashion style and for this reason there is a brief description of her wedding dress at the end of this post. As part of establishing a separate office from Kensington Palace in 2019, the Duke and Duchess created an Instagram social media account, which broke the record for the fastest account at the time to reach a million followers.

It was the first wedding dress to feature a trumpet skirt, and it set the trend for simple, understated wedding dresses. Princess Elizabeth married Philip Mountbatten on November 20, 1947 at Westminster Abbey in London. At the time of the wedding, World War II had recently ended but due to food and supply shortages coupon rationing was still in effect. After the engagement was announced, thousands of clothing coupons were received at Buckingham Palace to assist in making a wedding dress fit for a Royal Princess but it was illegal to transfer coupons. For this reason, the coupons were rightfully returned with a letter from Princess Elizabeth thanking the people for their generosity and thoughtfulness.

In 1938, she created a necklace made of clear plastic festooned with plastic insects in pinks, greens, yellows and blues. Theirs was a love story that, on the surface, looks undeniably romantic, and it was. It was a marriage that ended in a one-of-a-kind upset and inevitable exile for the couple involved. One of my favorite "Wallis" looks of all time has to be the Schiaparelli Lobster Dress created in collaboration with Salvador Dali circa 1935. Yesterday’s show therefore also marked a triumphant return for Schiaparelli - a brand that has struggled to find its identity, let alone hang on to a designer, since fashion magnate Diego Della Valle set about restoring it in 2007. The collection was the first since the brand was welcomed back into the world of haute couture by the French ministry of industry and the French Couture Federation.

The Duchess knew that her reputation was in tatters and as she had predicted during the Abdication Crisis, she had become the most hated woman in the world. She knew that she would have to change the public perception of her and so assembled a team of iconic creatives to help launch a very different Wallis Warfield Simpson to the public. She arranged a photoshoot to feature in Vogue magazine before the wedding in June. Cecil Beaton had been engaged to take the official wedding portraits of the Windsors but agreed to photograph the soon-to-be Duchess for the pre-wedding feature. Beaton must have imagined Wallis to appear as she had done so previously in his work; perfectly coiffed, wearing a beautiful modern gown in a lavish setting. Nearly 34 years after her death, the Duchess of Windsor continues to be celebrated for her sartorial style.

A Fashion Icon Know for her Jewels

After a stint in what is now Beijing, Simpson married the American-Brit Ernest Simpson, with whom she moved to London for a fresh start. Once there, the couple was solely focused on climbing the social ladder and moved in the elite circles of British society, eventually meeting Prince Edward. The prince, who went by David among his close friends, became enamored with Wallis, despite having several other mistresses at the time. He refused to complete his duty to his country as king without Wallis as his wife, who was now twice-divorced and unsuitable in the royal family's eyes to be queen.

The house created an haute couture version of the perfect little black dress beloved by the duchess. Even as an ingenue in her native Baltimore, she had known about the power of simplicity with a dash of glamour. The couple married in France in 1937 with few friends and no members of the royal family in attendance. The pair spent the rest of their lives living on the mainland of Europe, traveling and entertaining at their home base in France. A rise to the top was curtailed by an abdication and all the vitriol that that decision brought with it, and one has to wonder if it was what they thought it would be. After her uncle refused to pay for a coming-out party, she moved south and met a navy pilot to whom she was married to for a decade .

Wallis has become synonymous with haute couture and fashion houses such as Givenchy and Mainbocher still proudly cite her as a former client. What is perhaps not widely known is that the Duchess of Windsor was as much a part of the design process as the couturiers she favoured. Indeed, she disliked Chanel because Coco declined to change her creations to suit the Duchess’ ideas. Wallis learned early that fashion was an important calling card and she refused to compromise when it came to her style.

The Duke, dapperly dressed in all white, and the Duchess are photographed on holiday on the coast of the Mediterranean. The Duke was known for his eccentric personality and his constant devotion to Simpson despite his many mistresses before meeting her. The couple, both known for their suave sense of fashion, had a complicated relationship that was very much push-and-pull.

As in every home she has lived in, the duchess has made this Louis XVI mansion a highly personal creation. Large but crowded with collections, it manages to be chic and cozy, a word usually hard to come by in an atmosphere of such overwhelming elegance. "I'm not a beautiful woman. I'm nothing to look at, so the only thing I can do is dress better than anyone else," Simpson once famously said. But the reality was that as a woman often vilified by the press but unable to speak directly to them, Simpson mastered the art of conveying messages through her clothes. Designed by one of her favourite couturiers, Elsa Schiaparelli, the white gown featured a huge lobster drawn across the pelvis by Salvador Dali - a motif he’d famously said had sexual connotations when used in his surrealist paintings. Her outstanding sense of taste and style showed thru more than ever in her jewels.

Her clothes were as thought-provoking and individual as her approach to royal etiquette. When Coco Chanel’s boyish Breton tops and trimmed boxy jackets were de rigueur, Simpson was wearing American couturier Main Rousseau Bocher’s corsetry. In contrast, the duke had a seemingly effortless elegance that has made him a timeless menswear icon to designers like Ralph Lauren. The thick Windsor knot in his necktie, the checked shirts with plaid pants, and bumblebee-striped socks have entered the lexicon of stylish menswear. Yet this so-called chic fatigue or casual chic was more studied than people realized.
