The blue and black dress illusion is one of the most famous optical illusions of all time. The dress, which appeared on the internet in February 2015, became an overnight sensation, with people arguing over whether the dress was blue and black, or white and gold. The illusion is thought to occur because the human brain interprets colors differently in different lighting conditions.
However, when some of us see the dress and our brain assumes that we are looking at it in daylight conditions and makes some adjustments to account for the color spectrum of the light source. For about half of us, the brain discounts the blue side of the light source, subtracting out the blue from the actual color of the dress so that we perceive the dress as white and gold. For the rest of us, the brain discounts the gold spectrum of the light, yielding a totally different perception of the dress as that of a blue and black dress. Our brains are the most amazing supercomputers that exist. They are constantly computing information to help us perceive the world. Yes, the eyes, ears, mouth, nose, and skin are required to take physical information such as light waves, sound waves, chemicals, and touch into neural signals so that we can sense them.

There now appears to be good evidence that The Dress is in fact blue and black (but it’s always good to keep some scepticism regarding information on the internet). Therefore, arguably, people who originally saw it this way have better colour constancy. They were able to take cues from the background and compensate for the very unnatural illumination. There is evidence that people with good colour constancy also have better working memory and that these two processes may be related. Imagine how the world would look without colour constancy; objects would always be changing colour as you walked, say, through your house at different times of the day.
This is possibly something you’ve never thought about or been aware of before - you may well underestimate just how much the lighting in our world changes, because your brain compensates for it so well. This happens automatically without any conscious awareness. In The Dress photo, there aren’t many cues or reference points to tell us the properties of the light source. This leads to ambiguity and the possibility of different interpretations. On the day of the wedding, Caitlin McNeill, a friend of the bride and groom and a member of the Scottish folk music group Canach, performed with her band at the wedding on Colonsay.

What enters the eye is just a spectrum of wavelengths of light, we turn that into something with category boundaries and labels and connotations. But one thing’s for certain; The Dress is a brilliant example of how breaking the perceptual system helps us to learn more about how our brains work. Here is a black and white version of this illusion – the checkerboard illusion. The shade of squares A and B are identical, but our brains see them as light and dark. It makes assumptions about shading, and then corrects for the shadow effect, so that we correctly perceive the light squares as light, even when they are in shadow. The dress became a viral sensation and was widely discussed on social media, with many people debating the colors of the dress.

Delivery time is estimated using our proprietary method which is based on the buyer's proximity to the item location, the shipping service selected, the seller's shipping history, and other factors. But I've studied individual differences in colour vision for 30 years, and this is one of the biggest individual differences I've ever seen. There is currently no consensus on why the dress elicits such discordant colour perceptions among viewers, though these have been confirmed and characterised in controlled experiments .
Businesses that had nothing to do with the dress, or even the clothing industry, devoted social media attention to the phenomenon. Adobe retweeted another Twitter user who had used some of the company's apps to isolate the dress's colours. "We jumped in the conversation and thought, Let's see what happens," recalled Karen Do, the company's senior manager for social media. Jenna Bromberg, senior digital brand manager for Pizza Hut, saw the dress as white and gold and quickly sent out a tweet with a picture of pizza noting that it, too, was the same colours. Maybe this will inspire you to realize we all see things differently, in more ways than one.
