The Duchess is photographed with Dali in 1961.But there was a Dalí influence in another unusual photoshoot for Wallis that is worthy of note. In 1956, the Windsors “sat” for the Latvian photographer Philippe Halsman.
Indeed, just this week British Vogue featured a catalogue of her most iconic looks. Wallis has become synonymous with haute couture and fashion houses such as Givenchy and Mainbocher still proudly cite her as a former client. What is perhaps not widely known is that the Duchess of Windsor was as much a part of the design process as the couturiers she favoured. Indeed, she disliked Chanel because Coco declined to change her creations to suit the Duchess’ ideas. Wallis learned early that fashion was an important calling card and she refused to compromise when it came to her style.

From 1934, Dalí had started incorporating lobsters into his work, including New York Dream-Man Finds Lobster in Place of Phone shown in the magazine American Weekly in 1935, and the mixed-media Lobster Telephone . The lobster is placed low on the dress, between the legs of the wearer, with the tail of the lobster fanning upward toward the wearer's Mons Veneris, and its claws towards her calves. The lobster dress made its debut as part of Schiaparelli's Summer/Fall 1937 collection. Elsa Schiaparelli created this unusual lobster dress with the help of Surrealist artist Salvador Dali in 1937, demonstrating the interconnected nature of the fashion and art worlds in the early 20th century.
"I'm not a beautiful woman. I'm nothing to look at, so the only thing I can do is dress better than anyone else," Simpson once famously said. But the reality was that as a woman often vilified by the press but unable to speak directly to them, Simpson mastered the art of conveying messages through her clothes. Designed by one of her favourite couturiers, Elsa Schiaparelli, the white gown featured a huge lobster drawn across the pelvis by Salvador Dali - a motif he’d famously said had sexual connotations when used in his surrealist paintings. Her outstanding sense of taste and style showed thru more than ever in her jewels.

Her clothes were as thought-provoking and individual as her approach to royal etiquette. When Coco Chanel’s boyish Breton tops and trimmed boxy jackets were de rigueur, Simpson was wearing American couturier Main Rousseau Bocher’s corsetry. In contrast, the duke had a seemingly effortless elegance that has made him a timeless menswear icon to designers like Ralph Lauren. The thick Windsor knot in his necktie, the checked shirts with plaid pants, and bumblebee-striped socks have entered the lexicon of stylish menswear. Yet this so-called chic fatigue or casual chic was more studied than people realized.
