Did the clean up and started the first coat of min wax polyshades/black. Can I use liquid sandpaper instead of hand sanding? I have a couple of old pieces I’d rather not risk to sandpaper or blocks.
It is a gorgeous dresser and makes my daughter's room like beautiful. In case anyone is wondering, this dresser is MASSIVE. Definitely make sure you measure before buying. We are thinking about getting the same one in gray bc we love it so much. I would give it 4 1/2 stars if I could.
Black Stain vs Black Paint on Furniture – What I like About It:
The poly finish on the tables I used the black stain on was a thin finish, so a light sanding was enough to knock down the sheen with sandpaper. If your dining table has a thicker layer, you may need to sand a little more. When staining or painting any piece of furniture black or a very dark color make sure you have a few good light sources directed on every side of the piece. This way you can see if you are covering the surface completely and catch any drips before they dry.
Can you still see the wood grain with this technique? I would still like some of the graining to be seen. You can still browse our products during this maintenance. In setting up a dresser, always pay attention to the manual it comes with. Any misstep can lead to a void on any warranty and injury.
About Dressers + Chests
Polyshades is a very different than just plain stain. You want to make sure you apply it evenly so when the finish is dry, the shine of the poly looks smooth and even in the light. I’m getting ready to do this exact Minwax stain on my cherrywood dining table & large hutch. I’ve already used ASCP on the chairs. Painted them French Grey & followed up w/a wet wash of Graphite-water-French Grey. Thanks for being my inspiration to do this black stain!
With some interesting pulls or knobs, it will look very chic. It sounds like you haven’t given up on the piece – with sanding and some more effort you just may come up with one great looking piece. This has happened to me more than once when I paint something. It was not how I intended the piece to look, but it ended up looking even better. You just never know – so don’t give up.

This way, every tree is put to good use that little extra. Like it alot because it held all of my and my husband's clothes when we needed to consolidate our dressers. They hold alot of clothes very well. I didn't not give it a 5 star rating only because it took a very long time to assemble, other than that it's very good. The MultiSpread Model 220 is the smaller version of the 320. The 220 topdresser is only 45 inches wide, so it can pass through narrow gates and it is easy to navigate around trees, shrubs, and narrow areas.
The TruFlow topdressers are built to be used as a drop spreader for sand, topdressing mixes, and bagged materials that are dry & flow-able. Paint will not adhere to varnished wood and may even peel off. Varnish is a clear coating that is applied to wood to protect it from moisture and stains. The only thing I don’t like is the fact that it is oil-based. It needs to be cleaned-up with paint thinner. I don’t let this bother me too much though, because the finish comes out perfect – it is worth having to clean up or just throw out a brush. I updated two pine tables for a client’s living room. When I was assessing what furniture to keep for the room’s makeover, I thought of a way to make two country pine tables she had take on a more modern appeal. Most dressers do not come assembled, because it would be too heavy to move a dresser with all of its drawers.
If you can – then I would not use the stain, if you can’t scratch it off – then you are good to go. Once that is on you can paint the piece black. Use a roller and the best quality brush you can afford to get the best finish. Hi Chris – the black stain is perfect for furniture that you don’t want to add the thickness of paint. I would love to see them when they are done.
