None of the actual dresses created by Givenchy were used in either the movie or the promotional photography. The movie poster was designed by artist Robert McGinnis, and in Sam Wasson's book, Fifth Avenue, 5am, he explains that the photos on which he based the poster did not show any leg and that he had added the leg to make the poster more appealing. The actual dresses used in the movie, created by Edith Head, were probably destroyed by Head and Hepburn at Western Costume in California after shooting.
The dress evokes Coco Chanel, the original progenitor of the “little black dress” in the 1920s. The dress itself is sleeveless, with a neckline designed to accentuate Hepburn’s shoulders. The “demi-lune” cutouts in the back and the thigh-high slit add some sultry distinction. On its own, it would be beautiful; accentuated with some choice accessories, it was iconic. This hat is a true labour of love and has taken 2 years to finally perfect to become what we believe to be the most accurate and beautiful rendition of this gorgeous hat. Using high quality wool, and high quality satin, this hat took us thousands of dollars to develop to perfection. Prior to us making it, no hat maker had a hat mold that can create this size and shape. So we had to completely reinvent the entire process, and at least 7 different hats were made out of 3 molds before we were finally happy enough with the outcome. Kindly note that these gloves are pretty stretchy so if the hand size is a little bigger it should be just fine.
