They look too much like plastic to resemble urushi. If drips or runs form, let them dry before sanding them down. Don't try to fix them while the lacquer is wet or tacky.
If you’re old enough to remember Danielson from The Karate Kid, you simply “paint the fence.” LOL. Where you need to be careful is that you don’t overload your paintbrush. Overloading your paintbrush will leave your dresser with drips. To prevent paint drips, keep the paint on your brush light. To remove paint drips, smooth them out before they dry.

Black is a classic and elegant choice, but improper application can bring out any flaws and imperfections and make the paint appear messy. This article will not only teach you the proper way of painting your furniture, but also give you tips and advice on how to make the black paint look its best. You can simply wipe it down with a wet washcloth or rag and allow it to air dry. Or, if you’re pressed for time, you can run a dry cloth over the surfaces to speed up the drying time. You spray flat facing to the surface for an even level paint job, but you will need to move according to the individual piece you are painting. Some corners and designs are hard to spray, it just takes some time getting used too. Watch some spray painting videos to learn how to properly spray paint.

Another black paint by KILZ TRIBUTE is called Mystic Black, it’s not as dark but it still has a beautiful black touch for furniture projects. Use 120 grit sandpaper to scuff up the piece before painting. If you are staining a surface, any old stain or paint must be removed for the stain to properly soak into the wood. But, if your painting the surface, just go ahead and sand lightly until the surface is smooth.
You may get different results depending on the original wood grain, how much or how you little you initially sand. Don’t be limited by just one stain color either, feel free to mix one or two stain colors if you’d like a little variation or depth. Give a quick sanding over the wood stain to knock down any slight bumps or rough spots. This will create a super smooth finish to the top of your painted dresser.

My typical go-to is Amy Howard One Step Chalk Paint. The color of the weathered wood did deepen somewhat over night. I really did not want to change the look by applying a top coat.
You also need to evaluate whether the dresser needs sanding or not. You might not need sanding if the furniture piece has a nice smooth finish. But, you might want to give the paint some grooves in the furniture to create a bond.
Step 2: How To Prime Furniture Before Painting With Black or Dark Paint
The key to distressing furniture if to make the piece of furniture look like the paint is gone from natural wear and tear over the years. This is why you just sand the edges and corners. Regardless of the paint you select, be sure to use aquality paint brush. This will help you reduce brush strokes and ensure you have a beautiful finished product.
But, it still can be rubbed on the corners lightly for a nice black distressed shiny look. However, lacquer can also react with enamel paints. The reaction you may get is called crazing, this looks like little hairline cracks throughout the finish. I haven’t had this issue over enamel paints though.
