Sew a double row of basting stitches along the sleeve hem. Bahnsen’s dreamy yet quirky signature dresses are immediate head-turners on the street — and how they are styled by her cool girl following in real life was a key inspiration this season, she said. Her “intentionally imperfect” dresses — many with contrasting sleeve details — were layered with vaporous organza aprons, lightweight ribbed knits and a new addition, Japanese denim.
It seemed like a twist of fate — the heavens opened as guests were arriving to see Cecilie Bahnsen’s “We Are Water” collection on Wednesday, the one day this week in Paris with no rain forecast. Add the bottom tier to the top tier using the same method as before, minus the pocket step. Repeat the process for attaching the tiers to the back of the dress. Her first denim collection will be produced locally without any dyes, and many elements of the collection are upcycled.

To her, this juxtaposition is representative of her brand's evolution since she began showing in Paris last season. "It reminds me of when you throw a stone into the water," she explains. In the show, it was styled over a similarly-hued knit T-shirt, black socks and Asics customized with flower appliqués upcycled from a previous collection. Now, pinch the ends of the bias tape together, mark where they line up using a small snip, then sew the ends of the bias tape together.
I assumed she was just trying on a sample, but no, that was just her outfit. There was something radical about treating such a precious, beautifully constructed piece so casually, as if she'd randomly picked it up off the floor and thrown it on. Double-fold the bottom hem at a quarter-inch and sew to finish. On the sleeves, trim the excess gathered seam allowance. Then, fold in the binding twice to just past the original stitch, then sew down on the right side of the fabric. Fold each of the sleeve hem binding pieces down the center, lengthwise.

Iconic femininity and romance, Cecilie Bahnsen’s sculptural approach comes together in exquisite materials to achieve beautiful silhouettes in every dress created. Place a pin at the center top of the top tier and double baste stitch along the top. Stop and start your basting stitches at the center point. The tier pieces are very similar in size and shape, so keep them organized by marking the top of those pieces, and whether it’s a front or back piece on the wrong side of the fabric of each piece. Fold the sheet in half and lay all of the pattern pieces.
For the tier pieces, put the pattern on the cross grain. The set, featuring water-filled glasses and vases commissioned from artist and glassblower Nina Nørgaard, represented the team effort involved in creating the collection, the designer explained in a preview. This practical approach to styling did not detract from her dresses' exceptional craftsmanship. Bahnsen put much of her focus on the way the dresses would move, creating each silhouette right on the dress stand, transferring it directly from the stand to the fit model.

Sew the ends of the elastic together and sew up the gap. The back of the raglan sleeve has a double notch in the armhole area. Follow the same method for attaching the sleeves to the back bodice as you did for the front bodice. Pin the front of the raglan sleeve, as indicated by a single notch in the armhole, to the front bodice piece, right sides together, and sew. "We are so known for dresses. So it's really nice to now also introduce like this denim jacket, the trousers and the outerwear," she says.
Under stitch the seam allowance to the edge of the bias tape, really close to the seam. Place the unfolded hem binding on the sleeve hem, right sides together, and sew it on. For the tier and bodice pieces that are cut on the fold, snip a little notch at the fold to mark the center of the piece. Cecilie Bahnsen dresses are a must have in every fashion lover’s closet. Back at the studio, she showed me a beautiful blue silk dress that had been strategically shredded throughout, giving it a texture reminiscent of ripples in liquid. Asics, jeans, T-shirts and Macintosh coats bring her ethereal, hyper-feminine wares down to earth.
The denim pieces came by way of wide, heavy ivory pants and a cute jacket cropped and gathered at the waist, almost like a blank canvas under or over which to apply her airy creations. Crinolines lent structure to modern-day hoop skirts that bobbed, while others, more lightweight, appeared to float down the runway. Bahnsen’s familiar floral motifs found their way, meanwhile, onto more experimental pieces in a silvery fabric made from recycled paper. Note that all seam allowances on the pattern pieces are a half inch except for the neckline, which is a quarter inch.
